Wedding tip of the week!
timely tips to help make your wedding planning easier...by Sue.

Wedding Tip of the Week:

In this section, you'll find some hints to help make your wedding day run as smoothly as possible.

One new tip will be added every week or so.

All of these tips are tried and true - things that I would recommend heartily that all engaged couples and their wedding planners seriously consider.

Tip #1

Get your marriage license well before your wedding date so that if complications arise, you have time to deal with them.

Remember to bring your marriage license to the ceremony because you can't get married without it!

A lot of officiants ask that the engaged couple bring their license to the rehearsal so that the wedding isn't put on hold at the church the next day while the best man races to the groom's home to find the document.

Tip #2

Your wedding invitations should be sent out earlier than you think especially if your wedding is going to be held during the busy season - June, July, August - when people you are planning to invite will have lots of summer holiday plans.

Early notification gives people who are traveling time to make hotel and travel plans.

I always advise sending invitations out 3 months before the wedding date, with an RSVP date of 3 weeks before the event.

It is not unreasonable to send out e-mailed or snail-mailed pre-invitations a year or so in advance, something like:

Please save this date for our wedding celebration:

Saturday September 6, 2010
in North Bay, Ontario

A formal invitation for you will arrive in June 2010.

With love,

Mark and Sarah

Tip #3

Bridal party dresses can be an expensive proposition, but you can save money by shopping in non-bridal stores at prom time when sales of formal wear are on.

If the bride wants to wear a dress in the same style as her bridesmaids, remember that most bridal shops will charge a premium for bridesmaid dresses that are white.

Tip #4

Confirm everything just before the wedding date.

This means calling your caterer, reception venue, church, officiant, tuxedo rental shop, limo service, photographer, DJ or band, soloists, bakery, florist, jeweler, rental shops, hair salon about a week before wedding day.

Make sure they have all the correct information about the date, colours, numbers, kinds...

Check everything you have ordered to make sure you and the suppliers are all on the same page.

Also check in with friends and family members who are doing things for the wedding.

People who are asked to say grace and give speeches should be reminded about their job and that they should have everything written down.

People who are making or setting up decorations, centrepieces, cakes, favours also need to be contacted to make sure things are going well and that all will be finished and delivered on time and to where they are supposed to be delivered.

Rehearsal party plans should be confirmed as well.

Confirm everything just before the wedding date.

Tip #5

Everybody eats!

Stress and excitement might curb your appetite on wedding day, but it's essential that everybody in the wedding party and all parents eat something that day. Keep it simple and not too hard on your digestive system - bagels, muffins, fruit, mild cheeses, maybe some cold meat slices for making a sandwich, some cookies or banana bread, water... etc.

Make sure this food is readily available at the place where the bride and her attendants gather as well as where the groom and his attendants gather. Be realistic in your intake amount to avoid nausea and car sickness on the way to the ceremony, but we don't want anyone passing out from lack of food just before the "I do's" either! (Voice of experience speaking here, since I fainted at my sister's wedding many years ago.)
