Wedding Dresses;
set the tone for the whole wedding

Wedding-Dresses;

Ah, the anticipation of the appearance of the bride in her wedding dress - the moment when all of the wedding participants will finally be gathered to make this wedding happen.

The bride's wedding dress sums up the spirit of the wedding: if the wedding dress is regal or lacey, comfortable and laid-back, theme-oriented, old-fashioned or traditional..., we can expect the whole celebration to mimic it.

Compromise can be made on so many other aspects of the perfect wedding, but wedding-dresses should be, as much as is humanly possible, exactly what the bride wants.

Where to get them?

There are so many choices available to the bride when she is thinking about acquiring her wedding dress. She can:

  • purchase wedding-dresses from a bridal shop

  • purchase a dress from a factory outlet (Ever been to Queen and Spadina Streets in Toronto?!)

  • purchase a dress on line

  • purchase a dress from a retail clothing outlet (not a bridal specialty shop)

  • purchase a dress from a vintage clothing store

  • purchase a dress from a second hand shop

  • purchase a dress at a bridal or wedding dress show

  • sew the dress herself or have a friend or relative sew it for her

  • hire a dressmaker to sew her dress

  • wear the wedding dress used by her mother, sister, grandmother or other close friend or relative

  • rent a dress

  • Each of these options have their pros and cons which we will explore at a later date.

    Remember: You will probably be wearing this dress for a really long time on the day of your wedding, and you will need to be comfortable in it all day long.

    What questions?

    Before you begin the hunt for the perfect wedding dress, try to answer these questions:

  • what style of dress appeals to me? (pouffy skirt; length of sleeves; simple/elaborate...)

  • what colour am I looking for?

  • do I want a dress that's long? short? in between?

  • do I want to have a train on my dress? how long should it be? will it be able to remove it for the reception or be able to somehow hitch it up to make moving around easier?

  • do I want a veil and/or headpiece? will I be removing the headpiece when the ceremony is over?

  • what kind of shoes do I have in mind to wear with my dress?

  • is there a piece of jewelry (or other memento) that I want to wear to commemorate someone at my wedding - a necklace passed down to me from a wonderful grandmother - the look of which I need to consider when choosing a dress?

  • are we having a "theme" wedding and should I look for a dress which ties into the theme?

  • Once you start looking for a wedding dress, some of the answers you give to these questions might change.

    For example, let's suppose that you find a gorgeous dress, perfect in every way except one: you wanted a cathedral train and this particular dress is not available with a cathedral train. If the length of the train is way down on your list of priorities, this may still be the most-perfect dress for you.

    You may find your dress the first day you begin your search in the first place you start looking - or, it may take you several attempts.

    Be aware, that a lot of dresses purchased from shops may take up to 6 months to be delivered since many are actually made off shore and the manufacturer's wait till they have a bunch of orders before they ship them off.

    Custom wedding dresses may also take several months, depending on the dressmakers' schedule.

    Any dress may need to be altered before the wedding which also takes time.

    My point? If you are looking for the perfect wedding dress, don't wait till the last minute to start looking. Begin your search at least 9 - 12 months before your wedding date.
