Invitations;
not just a pretty piece of paper

Invitations; not just a pretty piece of paper, but a guide for your guests.

Okay, so the wedding gown and wedding rings have been ordered, the wedding venues have been decided and booked, the fruitcake that will be decorated as the wedding cake is marinating in brandy in the best man's cold room, and the guests list has been finalized.

It's time to make some decisions about wedding invitations.

They are the information package.

The wedding invitation is basically the guests' complete information package about the upcoming wedding.

After having received the invitation, guests should have no questions about what is expected of them on the big day. While some weddings will need only basic information for their guests, others will need to provide their guests with many more details.

It depends on what kind of wedding it is and where it is being held... all those things you need to decide before the invitations can be made or printed.

Let's consider two different kinds of weddings and what kinds of invitations would be appropriate for both. Remember, we're not talking about the looks of the invitations just yet, but what information the invitation needs to contain.

Wedding number 1:

Lynn and Jason are getting married in Toronto. It's a small wedding - only 40 people have been invited, most of them close family. The ceremony will be held in the chapel at The Old Mill Inn and the celebratory dinner and reception will follow immediately afterward, also at The Old Mill. Virtually all guests live in the Greater Toronto Area, so there will be no need for attendees to secure hotel reservations.

Lynn and Jason know that the only guests coming from afar - a brother and his wife from Edmonton - will stay with Lynn's parents.

A basic invitation will serve this couple well.

Here's a sample:

The only additional items needed for this invitation are a reply card, a stamped, self-addressed envelope so the guests can easily respond to this invitation, as well as a map to The Old Mill Inn from major roads in Toronto.

Wedding number 2:

Matt and Maria are getting married at their church in Kingston, Ontario where they met while attending medical school at Queen's University and where they have both lived and worked for many years.

Matt's family lives in Thunder Bay, Ontario and Maria's family comes from Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Here's more about wedding number 2.
